King Canute's bones rest in one of the mortuary boxes in Winchester Cathedral.
It is said Canute plundered Cerne Abbey during a Viking raid before his reign. He later became a benefactor.
King Canute had two concurrent wives.
Both survived him.
The Anglo-Saxon Ælfgifu of Northampton was Canute's first wife. It was a handfast marriage (not consecrated in Church). Legal at the time. She was Canute's regent in the North and Norway when required. Remarkably she was the mother of 10 children by him.
Queen Emma of Normandy (she came from Normandy) was Canute's second wife, marrying him in Church. She was the widow of the Anglo-Saxon King Æthelred the Unready. She was the Queen of England, Denmark and Norway, also his regent in the southern part of his Empire.
